In linguistics, prosthesis (from Ancient Greek prósthesis "addition")[1][2] is the addition of a sound or syllable at the beginning of a word without changing the word's meaning or the rest of its structure. The alternative spelling prothesis was first used in post-classical Latin,[3] based on Greek próthesis "placing before" or "in public".[4] A vowel or consonant added by prosthesis is called prosthetic or prothetic.
